The Project: The Hollywood Freeway Central Park is an innovative proposal to create a brand new street-level park in one of the densest and most underserved parts of Southern California. The Park will be created by covering U.S. 101, the Hollywood Freeway, as it winds its way below grade level through Hollywood.

Location: Hollywood, California. The final borders have not been decided, but the core of the park will be between the Sunset and Hollywood boulevards overpasses.

Size of the Park: Final dimensions have not been decided but it is expected that the Park will be at least 24 acres.

Benefits of the Park:

  • More than 24 acres of new park space in a densely populated and park-poor part of the City, without the use of eminent domain
  • Opportunity to make long-needed ramp improvements
  • Reconnect parts of Hollywood split for decades by construction of the freeway
  • Reduce global warming by replacing freeway surfaces with green surfaces
  • Better air quality

Who will Benefit: Accessible by two subway stops and numerous bus lines, the Park will be regional in its attraction. However, more than 100,000 people, including 23,000 children, live within just one mile of the Park.

Feasibility and Cost: Freeway ‘cap’ parks are already in existence in numerous cities. The City of Los Angeles, through its Community Redevelopment Agency, has committed $100,000 to pay for a feasibility study. This study, expected to be completed by late summer 2007, will provide an idea as to costs. However preliminary estimates indicate a cost of about $200 million, far less than what it would cost to purchase private land for a comparable park.
